New Grant Helps Older California Homes Stay Earthquake-Safe

California homeowners and renters now have fresh reason to feel more secure thanks to an expanded earthquake preparedness grant.

What’s Happening?

Starting Wednesday, August 20, 2025, the Earthquake Brace and Bolt program offers up to $3,000 to help retrofit older homes, making them less prone to sliding off or toppling from their foundations during a quake.

To apply, go to the California Residential Mitigation program website.

Registration for the program closes Oct. 1.

Who’s Eligible?

  • Wood‑frame homes constructed before 1980 qualify for the grant.

  • For the first time, the program now includes rental properties (not just owner‑occupied homes), opening up assistance to many more households. Around 23% of single‑family residences in California are rentals—this expansion ensures those occupants can also benefit.

Where It’s Available

The program now covers over 209 zip codes, ranging from Agoura Hills to Bell Gardens, so it’s worth checking whether your or your client’s area is included.

A Word of Caution

While this grant makes a big difference, it’s not a guarantee of full earthquake-proofing. Retrofitting helps reduce risks and potential damage—it’s about significantly improving resilience, not complete protection.

How to Apply

Interested homeowners or landlords should visit the California Residential Mitigation Program website to register and apply. Act quickly—registration closes on October 1, 2025.

Why This Matters for Older Homes

Many older homes were built before modern safety standards and remain vulnerable during a quake. This grant addresses that gap affordably—especially for older or rental properties often overlooked in disaster planning. Even a relatively modest upgrade can mean the difference between minor disruption and serious damage.

How You Can Use This:

  • Educate your clients: Especially those with older or rented properties—your guidance could help them access valuable funds.

  • Share the deadline: Early fall in 2025 is approaching quickly—October 1 is the cutoff.

  • Advocate proactively: Nudge clients to act fast and give them the application link, so they don’t miss out.
