New Cameras Installed in Altadena Following 450% Spike in Burglaries

In response to a sharp rise in residential burglaries, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has taken action by installing new license plate recognition (LPR) cameras throughout Altadena. From Jan. 1 to April 15, the number of residential burglaries reported in the Altadena area was up about 450% compared with the same period in 2024, according to data from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The LASD has placed seven cameras across key entry and exit points in Altadena. These solar-powered cameras are designed to track license plates in real time, allowing law enforcement to quickly identify vehicles linked to criminal activity. According to officials, the goal is not surveillance, but rather deterrence and investigation support.

Capt. Jabari S. Williams of the Altadena Sheriff’s Station emphasized that the department is taking these steps to improve public safety while balancing privacy concerns. He also stated that none of the cameras are located on residential streets—they’re focused on main roads and high-traffic areas.

Local homeowners and neighborhood associations have expressed both concern and relief. Some worry about privacy, while others welcome the added layer of protection in a time when residents are feeling increasingly vulnerable.

This rise in crime is not unique to Altadena; nearby communities have also seen similar patterns. Law enforcement officials believe many of the recent burglaries may be linked to organized crews targeting affluent neighborhoods across the region.

As a reminder to members:

  • Always lock doors and windows, even when home.

  • Install security cameras or alarms if possible.

  • Share suspicious activity with local law enforcement and neighborhood watch groups.
