First lawsuits filed against Southern California Edison over Eaton Fire

Three lawsuits were filed Monday morning against Southern California Edison (SCE) in connection with the devastating Eaton Fire.

Richard Bridgford of Bridgford, Gleason & Artinian issued a statement, saying, “Based on our investigation, discussions with various consultants, public statements by SCE, and video evidence of the fire’s origin, we believe the Eaton Fire was sparked due to SCE’s failure to de-energize its overhead power lines in Eaton Canyon. This failure occurred despite a red flag PDS wind warning issued by the National Weather Service the day prior to the fire’s ignition. Our hearts go out to the many victims of this and other Los Angeles fires.”

One of the lawsuits highlights “clear evidence from video footage, photographs, and witness accounts that the fire was caused by electrical equipment operated by SCE.”

Another accuses SCE of failing to adhere to critical electrical and fire safety standards, including neglecting proper maintenance of power lines and overgrown vegetation in the area.

The Eaton Fire, which has burned over 14,000 acres, destroyed at least 7,000 structures, and claimed multiple lives, remains under investigation. Surveillance footage and witness reports suggest the blaze may have been triggered by a downed power line.

Video evidence shows power lines running through Eaton Canyon arcing in strong winds just after 6 p.m. last week. Within minutes, the arcing lines ignited a fire that rapidly grew out of control.
